Category

Category: Collectibles → Stamps → Great Britain → Commemorative (1980-89)

Sub-category: 1985 Famous Trains issue

Condition

Unused, Mint Never Hinged (NH) if the gum is intact and no hinging marks.

Blocks of six (2×3) with left sheet margin including colour-registration marks and either tab or plate number “00” in the corner (as per your photo).

Very fine condition, well perforated, full margins, and no faults (creased, thinned gum or toning) – (please state any faults precisely).

Please note: Because many 1980s issues are relatively common, condition (especially the margin/tab/plate block and NH status) will heavily influence interest.

Valuation & Recommended Price

Valuation:

The 17 p “Flying Scotsman” (SG 1272) in mint condition is quoted at approx £0.50 in standard listings.

The 22 p “Golden Arrow” (SG 1273) in mint condition is quoted at approx £0.65 to £0.70.

A more recent commentary suggests the 17 p used issue is only valued at around £1 for a standard item.

Important caveats:

These values are for single stamps (or maybe standard mint singles) not necessarily sheet-corner blocks of six with tab/plate margin, so your blocks may command a premium — or they may not, depending on market demand.

The fact you have blocks of six with only the face value plus margin may be of more interest to thematic collectors (train theme) rather than specialist GB high rarities. Demand may be modest.

You will need to take into account shipping, protection, potential market saturation, condition, etc.

Recommended listing price (Buy It Now):

Given the above, a reasonable starting listing price might be around £8 – £12 each or £15 – £20 for the pair, possibly a little more if you emphasise the sheet-corner margin, tab/control strip, block of six, NH status, and train theme.

For example:

Block of six 17p: £8–£10

Block of six 22p: £10–£12

Or list both together: £18 (with option to accept best offers)

Auction option:

If you prefer auction, you might start at a low opening bid to drive interest, e.g., £4–£5 start each (or £8 start both together), with a reserve (hidden) at say £8 or £15 respectively to ensure you don’t sell too low. Allow a 7 – 10 day listing period.

Suggested eBay Listing Text

> For your consideration:

A lovely pair of 1985 Great Britain “Famous Trains” commemorative stamps, each in a block of six with sheet-corner margin, colour control/registration strip and plate “00” visible.

1. 17p – “Flying Scotsman” (SG 1272) – block of six, with left margin showing colour registration marks, unmounted mint, full gum, never hinged.

2. 22p – “Golden Arrow” (SG 1273) – block of six, same format, unmounted mint, never hinged.

These issues were part of the 1985 “Famous Trains” series and are perfect for the GB thematic collector interested in locomotives, railways, transport. The sheet-corner margin with registration colours and plate control adds interest beyond the basic single.

Condition: As seen in photos, very fine; full perforations; no visible faults; the gum appears intact; colours fresh and bright. I have taken clear images included to show margin, plate “00” and registration marks.

Shipping: UK shipping via Royal Mail (signed for) or international shipping available – please message for a quote. Stamps will be packaged carefully in archival safe mounts, board backed, and sent in an envelope.

Please review photos carefully and feel free to ask any questions. Because condition (gum, hinge, margin) is vital in stamps, I welcome inspection or additional photos of details.

Good luck bidding!
